WINEMAKER NOTES:
Insanely rich, dried fruit with chocolate and a bit of spice and clootie
dumpling! Rich, raisin and cinnamon with pepper and a long, dark chocolate
finish. This wine is an excellent example of a Valpolicella maid from Corvina
Veronese Grossa, a step above the rest.

Corvina
[kohr-VEE-nuh]
This Italian red-wine
grape is the principal ingredient in the
VALPOLICELLA and
BARDOLINO
wines of the
VENETO
region. In both of these wines, Corvina is blended with Rondinella and Molinara
to produce light-colored, light-BODIED
(see BODY)
wines that are characterized by a tart, cherry fruit flavor and a slightly
bitter almond character. This grape is also called Corvina Veronese and Cruina.
Valpolicella DOC
[vahl-paw-lee-CHEHL-lah]
A very important red-wine
DOC
zone located in northeastern Italy's
VENETO
region. It's situated between
BARDOLINO
and SOAVE,
just north of Verona. Valpolicella ranks just after the
CHIANTI
DOCG for Italy's total DOC red-wine production. The wine is made primarily
from Corvina Veronese (CORVINA),
Rondinella, and Molinara grapes, although four other varieties can comprise up
to 15 percent of the blend. Valpolicella's standard DOC wines are rather
LIGHT
and very fragrant and fruity. Those labeled
SUPERIORE
have a 1 percent higher minimum
ALCOHOL
content and are
AGED
for a minimum of 1 year.
