Winery
Warburn Estate has more than 1,000 hectares under vines. The large family
holdings give the Company an extremely competitive edge through tight control over grape quality.
Warburn Estate was officially established in 1968 by Giuseppe
and Tony Sergi, a farsighted father and son team of Italian descent. Giuseppe Sergi was born in Reggio Calabria, Italy on 13 February 1910. At the
age of 19, Giuseppe joined the army as a Basalieri for 18 months. At the age of 23, Giuseppe married Maria Sergi on 10 November 1934. In 1935, Giuseppe and
Maria had their first and only son, Tony. After World War II commenced, he was recalled to serve his country and fought in the battles for 2 years and after his
fourth child was released from duties. In 1952, Giuseppe and his family decided to move to Australia due to the traumatic post war conditions. In 1954, the
family moved to Farm 1305 Tharbogang.
By the end of 1998, the Company was awarded 363 medals and 10 trophies in only 4 years of entering the wine
show circuit. In 2000, the Company invested a further $21 million in winery and vineyards. These investments have enhanced wine quality, enabled Warburn
Estate to process increased quantities of grapes, meet the increasing export demand for Australian wines and achieve greater economies of scale in production.
.
The Company’s extraordinary range of styles and consumer price points in its portfolio now includes brands such as 1164 Family Reserve, Warburn, Lombard
Station, Three Corners, Kanga's Leap, Bushman’s Gully and Gossips.
Further, in May 2003 a $5.5 million bottling line capable of producing up to 10,000 bottles of wine an hour was
opened. The totally automated bottling line is part of a four-acre complex that also houses receiving and dispatch facilities, a laboratory and extensive
temperature-controlled warehouses for product storage.
Winemaker
Winemaking has been Sam Trimboli`s passion for nearly 20
years. He joined Warburn Estate in 1983 as a Cellar Hand, and worked his way up through the ranks of Cellar Master, Production Manager and Winemaker.
In 1995 he was appointed Chief Winemaker and now directs the activities of three winemakers. Sam has enjoyed tremendous success in wine shows, winning 28
medals in international wine shows and nearly 400 trophies, Top 100 awards and medals in Australian shows between 1998 and 2000.
His success is largely due the changes he has wrought both in the vineyard and in the winery, including greater control over grape production, the introduction
of new technology in the winery, changes to production techniques and the introduction of new grape varieties, blends and styles.
